What’s a witches familiar? In old folklore it was believed that a familiar was some kind of demon, or creature given to a witch from the devil or another witch to help them carry out “evil doings”. But a familiar is some kind of pet, totem, spirit that you are connected to either physically or spiritually that can share energy, even add extra power to your spell work. I have a 🐈‍⬛ black cat. She’s not my familiar. She adds not a thing to my practice except nail clippings and hair to some spells & gris gris bags. I digress. I have two totems I work with: bears & ravens. The raven may seem cliché, however Raven has been with me since my teenage years when I started throwing them scraps, came upon their feathers (I’m blessed to have 5), and my call out to them - and receiving a murder in response. Bear has been a dear family member since I was very young. I’ve always had teddy bears, I’ve seen glimpse of one in the wild, and he continues to come to me on shamanic journeys. Their medicine is strong. They assist me with information, shamanic journeys, and energy. But my familiar? A pug named Micky Pickles that I adopted from the ASPCA years ago. Until then, I’d never had an official familiar. Everyone talks about familiars, but I’ve yet to see a post about when a physical familiar has moved to the Shadow World. Micky died three years ago. I felt shards of my soul being ripped from my body. I have not been 100% since his death. He visits me in dreamwalking, and I do feel him. But I don’t think I will ever have another familiar, it took me 38 years to finally have one, and only seven years on the physical plane with him ( he was a bit older when we adopted him). My point? A familiar can come from the unlikeliest of places. It will change your life completely. I think that type of bond is one of the strongest I’ve ever had. Maybe someday I will be able to find those shards and heal my soul. I’ve been trying. But my world 🌎 and my Craft is now missing that important component; that silly face- laying in my lap during ritual, drinking water from my cup, and sneezing from the incense.
